The Beccaria family has had a business on Bay
Avenue in Capitola Since 1921. David's grandfather Joe Beccaria migrated
from Italy to Argentina in 1904 at the age of 14. He arrived in Santa
Cruz, CA in 1911. He worked in the redwood forests as a logger until
1914 when he enlisted in the Army. He spent two years in Europe during
World War 1 “in the trenches”. He received a purple heart
for a wound sustained on his arm. He purchased the family farm in
1921 from Lulu Lodge who was the grand daughter of Martina Castro
who held the original Spanish Land Grant for the Soquel Rancho. David
and his brothers occasionally visited Mrs. Lodge at her mansion behind
the family farm. The mansion is still standing today as a museum behind
the Capitola Mansion Apartments. David's grandfather worked the family
farm until his death in 1953.
David's father Frank Beccaria continued working the family farm and
added a produce stand. It was called Frank's Fruit Stand. During the
summer months there was a Fourth of July Fireworks Stand. The Fruit
Stand was famous for the all you can drink cold apple cider that was
sold there. Urban growth during the late 60's and 70's, zoning changes,
and economic pressures led to the demise of the family farm.
In the mid to late 1960's Frank Beccaria, David's Father, changed
careers and entered the real estate business. He opened Wellington
Realtors in 1972 on the site of the original farm. His office had
about 15 real estate agents and operated successfully as one of the
county’s leading real estate agencies until his retirement in
1992. He also served on the Board of Directors and other committees
for the Santa Cruz Association of Realtors during his career.
He also served as a Capitola City Councilman from 1968 to 1972. Previously
he had served as a Capitola Planning Commissioner for 8 years. He
also served as a volunteer fireman for the Soquel Fire Department
for 20 years between 1946 and 1966. He also served as a Director for
Central Fire Department for many years.
David joined the firm in 1978 and worked with his father and brothers
until 1987 when he opened his own business.
His brother Chris Beccaria now operates Wellington Realtors which
is in the same building as David's office. Chris and David work together
on many projects and heartily support each other’s businesses.
